Paddock Johnson were appointed following an invited competition to undertake a series of projects at Great Moreton Hall for a private client, including a development of bespoke, luxury houses within the Grade II Listed walled garden.
Great Moreton Hall is an exceptional, Grade II* Listed private residence situated south of Congleton, in Moreton cum Alcumlow, designed by Edward Blore for the Ackers family and built in 1841. Whilst Great Moreton Hall was in the ownership of the Manchester Corporation in the 1960’s, a number of poor-quality residential buildings were built in the walled garden. The current owners’ aspiration is to replace the existing buildings with three dwellings more appropriate to the setting.
Each of the proposed dwellings is arranged as a collection of smaller volumes designed to reference the ancillary buildings on the estate, centred around a glazed entrance hall and kitchen, a contemporary take on the traditional glasshouse. Carefully considered detailing and high quality materials create a highly contextual design response.
