The redevelopment of the former Z-block sites, located off Buckley Hill Lane in Netherton, has created an improved and varied mix of affordable dwellings.  The homes have helped to meet a shortfall in the provision of quality affordable housing in the area, particularly helping to meet the need for bungalows.  Overall, the scheme provides a mix of walk up apartments, one and two bed bungalows and houses, generating 53 no. new homes.

The 1960’s built Z-blocks no longer provided a popular residential option within the area and they had been demolished some 10 years before.  The site layout and orientation of the built form has been influenced by the surrounding network of existing roads and statutory services which required easements.

The variety of dwellings and design treatments provide strong visual frontage and offer improved street scenes which blend with the existing landscaping buffers.  The design layout of the scheme, which forms a series of cul-de-sacs, provides pedestrian connections to local facilities and bus links and open views towards the playing fields opposite.  The successful scheme has proved very popular with the new residents and continues to look attractive and well cared for several years after their completion.
